Projects + Initiatives Wayfinding

Getting around Downtown Houston is a major priority of the Downtown District's, and a user-friendly wayfinding system is particularly important.  As dense, urban environments become more complicated, people need visual cues such as maps, directions, and symbols to help guide them to their destinations. The Dowtnown District is currently developing signage and information systems for both pedestrians and motorists, each who have unique challenges navigating sidewalks, streets and roadways.

Capital Projects

A current capital project for Downtown is Vehicular and Pedestrian Wayfinding. The two projects are currently under construction and slated for completion in first quarter 2016.

The Vehicular Wayfinding project entails the refurbishment of 65 signs that were originally installed in 2000-2004 and the addition of one new sign. All signs are being upgraded with new paint finishes, stainless steel accents, LED light bars, and reprinting or commissioning of original artwork at the upper panel on the opposite side of vehicular messages.

The Pedestrian Wayfinding project is an entirely new system that replaces older infrastructure. It is comprised of 109 signs in three different sizes: four-sided with destination messages and maps on four sign cabinet faces, two-sided with messages and maps on two faces, and post and panel with messages on two faces. Based on the sign location and intensity of pedestrian activity, the different sign types allow for messages directing pedestrians to nearby venues. With the Vehicular and Pedestrian Wayfinding projects, the overarching goal is to provide a unified aesthetic system of signs in terms of materials and colors, with coordinated messaging schedules across the various sign types.

Once completed the new wayfinding system will assist Houstonians and visitors locate the public facilities and major venues across Downtown.
