Storm recovery update for May 17-18, 2024: To protect the public, HPD will assign officers to Downtown intersections where storm damage is greatest, an area roughly from Walker St. to Clay St. and Smith St. to Fannin St. Road closures and limited pedestrian access will remain until the properties and area are deemed safe. Tomorrow, our crews will be back at work at 7 a.m. removing the remainder of shattered glass and treating an estimated 200 downed or damaged trees and landscape. Before traveling into Downtown, please confirm the event has not been cancelled and your planned route has been cleared.

Stay Downtown: The Lancaster Hotel

Located in the heart of Houston’s Theater District, The Lancaster Hotel is known for its history of superb hospitality. Built in 1926, the hotel has hosted vaudeville performers from yesteryear to today’s biggest stars of the stage, and serves as a luxurious escape in Downtown Houston.

Each guestroom is designed to be classically distinctive yet elegantly authentic. Equipped with Frette bedding and linens (crafted in Italy) and BVLGARI bath products, luxury is The Lancaster’s middle name.   

The hotel went through major renovations following Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The result? A combination of classic elegance and art deco, highlighting the original architecture and design by noted Houstonian Joseph Finger (Finger was also responsible for designing Houston’s City Hall). Today, The Lancaster has placed a new focus on fine art with a collection of more than 200 contemporary pieces by Texas artists. Expect to see works by Donald Judd, Mark Flood, James Surls and Gael Stack, just to name a few.

The hotel’s restaurant, Cultivated F+B is just one more reason to love The Lancaster. It’s not hard to find good seafood in Houston, but when you’re in the mood for crab cakes, Cultivated F+B’s are exceptional. Paired with the unique deviled egg collection, you’ve got a perfect meal for brunch, lunch or dinner. If you’re an early riser, stop by the walk-up espresso bar situated just next to the lobby.
