“Women’s Freedom of Choice” is a mural that pays tribute to women deprived of their rights and freedom in their own countries. The United Nations Secretary-General emphasized in 2023 the plight of women and girls in Afghanistan, now “exiles in their own country” due to laws banning them from public life, and their counterparts in Iran, who have taken to the streets to demand fundamental human rights at great personal cost such as the death of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old woman who died in police custody in 2022. You can hear the song “Baraye” by Shervin Hajipour, an anthem of the protest movement in Iran, in the app Behind The Wall.
